Compared to most recent years, when for example I recorded 165 species in the county in 2011, 187 in 2012 and 173 in 2013, this has been a particularly poor one with just 157 species recorded by mid December - one of my worst years on record

It's all over - 2012 has come to an end. I managed a total of 187 out of the 198 species recorded all told in Buckinghamshire - 94% of the total - probably my highest-ever annual tally.

The current record is 191 species achieved in 2006 and held jointly by both Rob Hill and Simon Nichols

Jim Rose checked the vaults when he got home and informed me that this flock of 13 was not the record flock we had assumed! The record count is actually a flock of 26 or 27 flying over Wavendon on 20th April 1989, while there was also a flock of 13 at Willen Lake on 22nd August 1987.

GREAT WHITE EGRET still present at Floodplain Forest Local Nature Reserve

You may well ask where but Floodplain Forest Local Nature Reserve is the new name given to the site formerly known as Manor Farm Workings at Old Wolverton. Anyhow, I took a trip up there this afternoon after Ted had seen the bird early morning and there it was - showing well up the west end and feeding in tow with a Little Egret and Grey Heron. I sat down and waited quietly and over the course of an hour was treated to some remarkable views. Here are my photographic results........
